REVIEW ON THE ARTICLE OF INTERGRATING SOCIAL
NETWORKING INTO ESL CLASSROOM
Technology is
rapidly developing even in this modern age world. This makes students able to
improve their writing skills through use of integrating social networking services.
Teachers that use integrating social networking to teach students in the
classroom have open up a new way to teach students. This new way of teaching
have its advantages. For shy students who cannot speak up in the classroom integrating
social networking services is the perfect place for them to write what they
cannot say in the classroom as well as build up their confidence. This is
because they will not have to face their peers and teachers so there is no need
to be shy. Students can post a review and their peer can comment on them. This
undoubtedly will influence the student to improve their writing skills and
their creative thinking skills. Those are just some of the advantages and I am
sure there are more to it just that we don’t know yet. However, there are also
some disadvantages in using integrating social networking to teach. Students
will easily be distracted by their friends status update on Facebook, Twitter
and so on. This way students are not really studying but rather they are just
wasting their time. Not to mention that the student will use short form when
chatting or commenting with their peer. This does not improve the students
writing skills but actually the opposite as they may even forget how to spell
and write the right way. Furthermore, on rural area it may be hard to get
access to the internet as the school may not have the equipment to do so.
Teacher will also have less time to interact with the student if they
constantly use integrating social network.
This world we
live in have a lot of integrating social networking services that even I have
not even heard or know yet. I’m sure a lot of those integrating social
networking can be use to teach students but from my perspective teaching the
students using the old way is better. The old way that I am talking about is by
using whiteboard and the teacher talking in the front of the classroom while
the student listen and take note. If the student is confuse or do not
understand they can just raise their hand and ask. This will allow for some
teacher-student interaction. Even if by some chance that I have to teach my
student using technology I will definitely
try to fuse the old way of teaching and the technology based way of
teaching so that my student will benefits from it greatly.
